Category of Teachers Not Likely to be Employed by TSC. Primary and secondary school teachers are now required to complete a retraining program that lasts the entire academic year in order to be prepared to meet the demands of the new curriculum.

The President’s Task Force on Education Reform (PWPER) has this proposal, which emphasizes the importance of educators accepting the CBC.

The CBC, which has been in operation for the previous seven years, will continue to serve as the primary resource for educators after they complete their retraining. The task force proposed that the Ministry of Education (MOE) take over the training previously provided by the Teachers’ Commission (TSC). Within one year of the approval of the updated plans for implementation, the TSC will be replaced by the Ministry.

    Instructions for retraining

The Ministry of Education will publish guidance on the necessary retraining that all teachers who earned their degree before 2023 will need to meet the curricular changes. If you disobey, you risk being expelled from school, which will hurt your prospects of finding employment later.

Who would be responsible for paying the costs of retraining the instructors is not mentioned in the preliminary report, although this information is crucial. Unions that represent teachers have long argued for more government funding to support teachers in this endeavour.

Anyone who applies for an instructor position but is not willing to complete an internship will not be considered for the position. Teachers have an obligation to use this opportunity for further training to improve their skills and position themselves for successful CBC implementation.

Increasing teachers’ abilities and their readiness for challenges

The task force concluded that the biggest obstacle to the implementation of CBC was the insufficient level of skills and training of teachers. Stakeholders who had previously attended TSC’s CBC training complained that the sessions were either too short or too superficial, or that the instructors lacked basic experience.

Those who expressed their concerns also mentioned inconsistent approaches to the interpretation of curriculum designs and a lack of appropriate responses to their concerns.

The creation of the Kenya Teachers Training College was proposed as part of a plan to raise the standard of teaching offered in Kenyan schools. More Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) are expected to include satellite campuses of the parent institution.
