Education Ministry Issues New University Entry Requirements
Education Ministry issues new University Entry Requirements..The government has made major changes to compulsory courses and university entry criteria. As part of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, the Kenyan Ministry of Education has introduced a new assessment system.
The announcement was made by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machgu at the start of the 2023 national examination period.
Under the revised assessment system, students are only required to take two compulsory subjects, i.e. Mathematics and one language (English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language), to determine their GPA. In addition, students have the flexibility to choose up to five additional subjects in which they excel.
This reform is expected to increase the number of applicants who can be accepted in universities, degree programs, technical and vocational education and training programs (TVET) at the certificate and vocational level.
The Ministry of Education is also reviewing the minimum admission standards for teacher training programs, particularly the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE). Admission to this program will now be based on new criteria and test results for subject groups.
This change is in line with the recommendations of the Education Reform Task Force, which aims to improve IT infrastructure for school programs and improve IT infrastructure for the integration of technology into education among teachers, parents and other stakeholders.
In addition, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is promoting digital literacy by providing e-assessments to prospective teachers and equipping students with digital skills that can benefit them.
Consequently, the government took measures to ensure the safe and timely distribution of test materials to various locations and the safety of financial assets. This action is part of the government’s commitment to monitor climate forecasts and evaluate test results for 2023.
