Government Announces Hiring of 24000 Teachers in July
Government Announces Hiring of 24000 Teachers in July. In an effort to address the nationwide teacher shortage, the government’s Ministry of Education unveiled plans to hire roughly 24,000 new teachers on June 28.
The hiring procedure will start at the start of the fiscal year 2023–2024, according to Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education.
At the Kenya Secondary Heads Association’s (KESSHA’s) 46th Annual Conference, Machogu gave a speech at Mombasa’s Sheikh Zayed Hall.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will support parity in teacher deployment, the CS assured school administrators.
According to Jamleck Muturi, chair of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), qualified teachers will be able to start applying for the positions the week beginning July 3rd, per Machogu’s directive.
Muturi added that in an effort to alleviate the nation’s teacher deficit, the Kenya Kwanza government has set aside Ksh4.6 billion to hire interns.
In addition to employing instructors and interns, TSC also stated that it has secured a Ksh1 billion capitation for promotions, notably for principals.

Additionally, as of July 1, the government will no longer pay capitation to schools using a quarterly schedule; instead, school heads will now get capitation in the ratios of 50:30:20 for the first, second, and third terms, respectively.
According to Machogu, the government would hire 60,000 teachers in total during President William Ruto’s first year in office.
Ruto’s administration has already employed 36,000 new teachers since taking office in September 2022 as part of the largest hiring drive in TSC history.
For the fiscal year 2022–2023, TSC hired 36,000 employees, the majority of them were interns, but they also hired 9,000 teachers on permanent, pensionable terms.
The number of teachers who would be engaged on a permanent basis with pension benefits for the fiscal year 2023–2024 was not provided by the government, nevertheless.
The 24,000 extra teachers will help with the nation’s education crisis, but Muturi asserts that Ruto’s promise to hire 35,000 teachers was not kept.
On May 20, 2023, while delivering a speech at Limuru Girls Secondary School, the President announced that the government would match teachers hired in the 2022/2023 budget year in the next fiscal year.
