KNEC Proposal to Alter Grading System. The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) made recommendations to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) grading system.
The team has asked KNEC to stop utilizing the present grading system for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), and it has submitted its findings to President William Ruto on Tuesday.
In addition to mathematics, English, and Kiswahili, the team advises that KNEC base its calculation of the KCSE exam mean score on a student’s performance in five other areas.
The KCSE grading system currently considers seven topics, including English and Kiswahili, Mathematics, two science disciplines, and two other subjects.
Certain students, according to the team, are damaged by this computation because their best-performing classes are not taken into account, at least not within the cluster.
While mathematics and science classes assess students’ numeracy, English and Kiswahili both assess students’ literacy, according to the panel.
Students who struggle with English will be able to enroll in disciplines such as engineering, law, and medicine, which currently require better English test results regardless of Kiswahili competence, under the radical idea.

Furthermore, students who excel in Kiswahili will now be permitted to pursue further education even if they perform poorly in English.
Universities have lately increased the cluster points for many degrees, including education, and now need applicants must have at least a C (Plain) in English before admission.
However, according to the revised suggestions, colleges would only evaluate English or Kiswahili, and KNEC would similarly remove both disciplines when determining mean marks.
