Pending August’s Payrise TSC Invites Knut and Kuppet for CBA Discussions
Pending August’s Payrise TSC Invites Knut and Kuppet for CBA Discussions. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has called the teachers union for a meeting next week to review the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
In a letter to the general secretaries of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Primary Teachers (Kuppet), the TSC set August 22, 2023 as the date for the talks.
“The purpose of this letter is to request a meeting with the Teachers’ Service Group scheduled for Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 09:00. The meeting will be held at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Lower Kabete, Nairobi,” he said.
The two unions are trying to review the non-monetary CBA they signed in 2021.
They want the commission to review the non-cash CBA to account for lost wages due to the increase in statutory deductions and the introduction of new fees such as the affordable housing tax.
“Earlier, TSC offered Sh2 billion for teachers’ allowance, which was accepted, but the National Treasury reduced it to Sh1 billion. We still want TSC to sit with us and pave the way for talks,” he said.
“Well-paid teachers cannot speak. “If the government wants productivity, we will open negotiations on the missing wage structure in 2021,” he said.
Knuth wants a 60% salary increase for teachers, while Kuppet wants a 42% salary increase for teachers starting July 1.
TSC, Knut, invited Kuppet to the CBA talks before August
The reopening of CBA talks is in line with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) agreeing to a wage increase from 7% to 10% effective July 1 and paid in two phases.
The TSC has yet to issue a new fee structure to reflect the changes announced by SRC chairman Lin Mengich on August 9, 2023.
In the month of August, teachers and civil servants will receive a 5% salary increase starting July 1. Housing benefits will also change.
Knuth added that it is a way for the government to give one hand and give the other by SRC.
If the CBA negotiations are successful and an agreement is reached, teachers will be the biggest winners with increased perks.
That’s because the CBA talks focused on reviewing teachers’ salaries and allowances starting July 1, 2021.
