Private University Funding Scrapped
Private University Funding Scrapped. The students who will be attending private institutions in 2022 would experience hardship as a result of a proposal that was put up by the national assembly education committee on March 9, 2023.
The government has mandated that the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) program cease placing government-sponsored students at private universities in response to the plan.
This committee claims that the action will assist the government in lowering the debt burden at Kenya’s public colleges.
Thus, the Education Committee has now suggested that KUCCPS only enroll students who are sponsored by the government in public colleges.
The committee claims that private universities have been receiving funding each year, which has contributed to their lack of resources.
The government would no longer provide support to private universities starting in 2022, according to Tinderet, the member of parliament who chairs the committee.
The government would continue to subsidize students who were already enrolled in the program, so these new modifications would not have an impact on those who were still taking classes.
