Homa Bay University Students Form a Group to Air their Interests
Homa Bay University Students Form a Group to Air their Interests. An association has been formed by Homa Bay students who are enrolled in various colleges around the nation to address the issues they face while they pursue their academic goals. Finding attachment and internship possibilities is one of these issues. These students are asking the Homa Bay government and political officials for help in the form of bursaries to ease the financial burdens associated with their studies, especially for those from underprivileged homes.
The Homa Bay Universities Students Association (HUSA), which these students are operating under, aims to represent their rights and interests. They are adamant about not letting politicians take advantage of them during elections and then ignoring them afterwards.
Alfred Amollo, chairman of HUSA, his deputy Flanky Buong, and election monitor Mildred Awuor underlined the value of equitable bursary distribution. The existing differences in the sums handed by some Members of Parliament, with some offering as little as Sh2,000 while others offer Sh10,000, are seen as unfair, in their opinion. These differences are thought to be insufficient given the high annual cost of university tuition, which can be as high as Sh150,000.
Buong has suggested starting a fund to help all students who are having financial difficulties. In addition, HUSA seeks to address problems with teenage pregnancies, SGBV, and the high prevalence of HIV in Homa Bay. They intend to launch campaigns aimed at empowering young people and addressing these social issues.
Rachael Ogutu, a spokeswoman for the Homa Bay administration, said that by offering attachment and internship possibilities through several agencies, the government is already addressing some of the concerns of the students. A bursary scheme has also been launched by the government to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Kennedy Ondiek, a former Kibiri MCA, applauded the kids for establishing the organization and recognized its potential to strengthen their group voice and promote change.
