The Teacher Service has the constitutional authority to supervise the workforce, hire, promote and monitor discipline.
In line with its mandate, the commission asked Parliament to allocate Ksh 10 billion for the next financial year.
Part of the money will be used to promote the remaining teachers in the work group, and the rest will be used to hire permanent and retired teachers.
According to TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia, the money is part of several key areas that were not provided in the last financial year up to the end of June.
“The commission will appreciate any facility allocated to this area,” said Macharia.
The CEO told the House that the commission will request Ksh 2 billion to promote teachers competitively, while Ksh 1.2 billion to recruit trainee teachers and Ksh 5.3 billion to recruit 8,000 teachers permanently.
Macharia was addressing Parliament’s Education Committee for the 2022/2023 Budget Policy Statement
This will be good news for other teachers in the work group, as there is hope to be promoted to the next grade, which means better service conditions.
It will also be good news for the many unemployed teachers who have registered with teacher service groups, since they have great chances of also being absorbed into Teachers Service Commission.
