TSC Selects a Team of Officers to Check on teachers in Schools
TSC Selects a Team of Officers to Check on teachers in Schools. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has released a team of its officials who will go around schools to, among other things, check the performance of teachers.
A team drawn from TSC Quality Assurance and Standard Officers (QASO), TSC County and Sub County will move from school to school to check the quality of teachers’ work.
The TSC will also review the Program Director of Mentoring and Coaching (TIMEC) for teacher induction.
The commission earlier said the mentoring and coaching program will improve teachers’ performance in their jobs.
TIMEC is a structured teacher support program focused on preventive measures in the management of teachers’ professional behavior and performance.
TSC developed the TIMEC program as part of a wider strategy to develop the professional ethics and practice of teachers.
The program focuses on building teacher competencies and skills, as well as knowledge of the laws, regulations, policies, practices, values and standards that govern the teaching profession.
A team from the Commission will also check teacher readiness and classroom attendance, which includes whether teachers are preparing schemes of work and lesson plans, marking attendance books and student work, as well as preparing teaching aids.
They will also conduct classroom visits to assess the quality of teachers’ teaching.
TSC Director General Nancy Macharia said outreach services are very crucial in the implementation of teacher performance assessment and development.
This comes after she promoted a large number of deputy principals to Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs).
In his report to the education committee, Macharia said the services are important for the implementation of the performance and supervision contract as required by section 11(c) of the TSC Act 2012.
“They play a big role in dealing with backlogs of discipline in a timely manner and in implementing teaching standards,” Macharia said.
The TSC will also oversee the implementation of TPAD (Performance and Appraisal Development).
The TPAD 2 system is a mechanism that enables the TSC to evaluate teacher performance against standards set by the agency.
The system officially began to operate in 2016 with the main goal of improving the performance of teachers and subsequently the academic results of pupils.
TPAD measures the quality and effectiveness of teachers using seven teaching standards – expertise and application, time management, innovation and creativity in teaching, student protection, safety, teacher discipline and behavior and support for co-curricular activities.
