A Number Of CBC Changes Proposed by Education Taskforce
A Number Of CBC Changes Proposed by Education Taskforce. An education task force has recommended that middle schools (JSS) be housed in existing elementary schools, in a report presented to President William Ruto on Tuesday, August 1.
The task force, launched on September 30, 2022, is tasked with providing guidance on a number of issues in the education sector to improve policies and strategies.
In the report presented to Statehouse on Tuesday, the task force proposed an appropriate structure for implementing a competency-based curriculum (CBC).
“Develop guidelines for operating K-9 as a comprehensive school. This Ministry of Education establishes a comprehensive school system where all levels of education, from preschool to 9th grade, are managed as a single institution headed by the principal,” the report reads.
Another recommendation is that the Teachers Services Commission (TSC) provide comprehensive school teacher professional development guidance and provide guidance on the provision of alternative basic education and training.
The task force also tasked the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to reduce the number of subjects in secondary schools from 14 to 9.
The report also recommends that kindergarten students should take no more than five subjects, elementary school students no more than seven subjects, and elementary school students no more than eight subjects.
It also proposes that middle school students have no more than nine subjects and high school students no more than seven subjects.
The Department of Education also discourages the classification of secondary schools into different frames such as national, out-of-district, district and others. Instead, the task force wants schools to be ranked by career paths like the arts and social sciences, among other things. The task force says it is to improve equity and inclusion.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has been tasked with devising a structure to track the progress of CBC learners not for placement but for feedback.
