Challenges facing Bright but Needy students joining Form One. Upon completion of primary studies, marked by the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE), every child’s desire is to join a secondary school of his or her choice. Therefore, many work hard to attain the best marks to open the doors to great high schools in Kenya.
Unfortunately some from less fortunate families find it difficult to fulfill their dreams since they cant meet the fees requirements and other items required for them to join Form One. Countrywide cases of needy but bright students is streaming as some have come to limelight asking for financial support from well wishers and government, since the parents and guardians are overwhelmed and some not able at all to fund their high school studies.
A good example is of Aloyce Ayanga, 16, who scored 379 marks in last year’s KCPE and emerged the top student out of 102 pupils at Wandiege Primary School in Nyamasaria in Kisumu county.
Ayanga, who dreams to become a neurosurgeon, says his family is poor, thus unable to raise his school fees to join St Peters Mumias High School in Kakamega County.Since the father who was the bread winner died three years ago. Ayanga also said that he had filled bursary forms and scholarships with no luck.
His primary teacher who accomodated him since he was standard six says that he could wish well wishers to chip in for the financial support, since he cant manage alone.Therefore he is planning to set up a pay bill for Ayanga’s fundraise.
Other evident situations are from Kakamega County, where two boys who showed the thirsty for education. This is after they missed to join the schools they were selected to by the Ministry of Education and decided to join local school where they trek for 14 kilometers.
Another case, a boy presented himself together with parent ,who came barefooted, to Nyambaria High school empty handed. The confidence and desire to join the school made the principal to meet the boy and accepted to give him a sponsorship and later on register him to a scholarship to cater for his studies.
With this arising cases, parents and guardians from humble backgrounds are advised to fill bursary forms and other scholarships which can be available in the county for instance in Murang’a County.
