Excellent Advances for TSC Teachers Interning as KUPPET Demands This From TSC
Excellent Advances for TSC Teachers Interning as KUPPET Demands This From TSC. Schools reopened today, Monday, August 28, for the third term of the 2023 academic year. This return to classrooms comes amid a significant dispute between the teachers’ union and the Teaching Service Commission over teacher pay increases.
In this regard, there is positive news for teachers participating in the Teachers Service Commission internship program thanks to recent actions by the Kenya Union of Post Primary School Teachers (KUPPET). This trade union, composed mainly of pedagogues at the 1st grade of elementary school, is advocating for an increase in the wages of interns. They argue that the current offer of twenty thousand shillings is insufficient.
KUPPET further advocates that the Teacher Service Commission hire interns for permanent and retired positions without the need for an interview after completing one year of service.
At the center of these discussions is Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia, Director General, Teachers Service Commission.
KUPPET’s primary demand is for the Teachers’ Service Commission to raise teachers’ salaries by a substantial margin, namely 30 to 70 percent. They rejected the 7 and 10 percent increases proposed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
On another front, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has its own set of demands on the Teachers Service Commission:
1. The KNUT wants the commission to stop the implementation of the President’s Education Task Force report, which suggested that head teachers without a degree should be demoted in the new reforms.
2. Instead, KNUT is pushing for the Teachers Service Commission to give headteachers enough time to complete their degree programs as most of them are currently enrolled in undergraduate degree programmes.
3. In addition, the KNUT is pushing for an increase in the salaries of teachers currently at grade B5, which is the lowest level.
These are the key changes in ongoing discussions between teaching unions and the Teaching Service Commission at the start of the new academic term.
