Funding Board Reveals The Number of Times Students Will Apply for University Loans and Scholarships Per Year
Funding Board Reveals The Number of Times Students Will Apply for University Loans and Scholarships Per Year. Geoffrey Monari, CEO of the University Fund, informed that students must apply for loans and scholarships every year.
Monari said in a meeting with the National Assembly’s education committee on Thursday that the change will allow them to determine which students can go to college.
He also said that it would allow them to budget more responsibly, as some could change their studies.
Monari emphasizes the importance of this process in cases where students die or have a change in their personal circumstances while enrolling in their courses, emphasizing the requirement for an annual application from all students.
Students should be updated on current enrollment status and changes in family dynamics that may affect scholarship and loan eligibility, he said.
Students without a national ID will be required to submit their KCSE index number and birth certificate when applying for scholarships and loans. According to Ezekiel Machogu, the granting of loans is a contract between the Higher Education Loans Board and the students.
Machgu explained that due to the legal ban on contracts with minors, the granting of loans to individuals without ID cards will be suspended until the required identification documents are provided.
Once students are classified under the new funding model, they will be awarded scholarships and sent to university or college. Meanwhile, the HELB loan will be withheld for them upon submission of their national identity card.
According to Machogu, universities and colleges have been notified of the move and are expected to receive students.
Next week, according to HELB CEO Charles Ringera, students will learn how they are grouped to determine how much tuition they will pay.
