JSS Intern Teachers React To TSC Two Year Internship Rule
JSS Intern Teachers React To TSC Two Year Internship Rule. The junior high school teachers (JSS) are protesting the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) rules that require them to serve for two years before being promoted to permanent status and pension.
Many teachers were surprised when TSC announced that it would be approved permanently in 2025.
Earlier, TSC used to recruit trainee teachers and absorb them into pnp salary after one year.
However, the paradigm shift can be attributed to the large number of experienced teachers KPK is recruiting and the country’s struggling economy.
This week, TSC announced that trainee teachers must stay longer before becoming permanent and retiring.
TSC Director of Human Resources, Antonina Lentoijoni, TSC Legal Director, Calvin Anyuor, who appeared before Parliament’s Education Committee, said that all 46,000 trainee teachers will automatically convert to pnp after two years of service.
The Board insists that no teacher be recruited permanently before completing two years of experience.
TSC says it has 46,000 teachers working in practice settings from primary and secondary schools, including junior high.
Previously, TSC had defended itself by saying that its policy allowed teachers to serve a maximum of two years.
However, many practicing teachers say this will be reduced due to their low salary, which is not in line with the current cost of living.
The board hired 20,000 intern teachers in February. 20,000 more apprentices were employed in August.
In January 2022, TSC sent a total of 1,995 intern teachers to schools. TSC has also extended probationary contracts for 4,005 teachers whose one-year term ends in December 2021. This brings the total number of trainee teachers to 46,000.
TSC plans to hire 20,000 more intern teachers to help with Grade 8 starting next January.
Trainers working in primary schools receive a monthly stipend of Kshs. 15,000/= secondary school students get Kshs. 20,000/=.
However, high school students 3,0000 for deduction, which is initially Rs. 2000
