KNUT Calls for Increased Salary and Fair Treatment for Interns
KNUT Calls for Increased Salary and Fair Treatment for Interns. During the 20th Conference of the Kenya Primary Teachers Association, Knut, led by Secretary General Collins Oyuu, strongly emphasized the critical need for increased government funding at various levels of education.
Addressing the problem of delayed or insufficient allocation of free primary education and free full-time secondary education, Knut highlighted the resulting financial crisis in schools. Oyuu specifically emphasized the importance of sufficient funds for the effective implementation of educational programs.
Proposed Allocations:
– For pre-primary students in particular, Knut is proposing an increase from Sh1,170 to at least Sh5,000 per pupil.
– Similarly for primary schools, the union is pushing for Sh4,000 to be allocated to each pupil, a significant increase from the current Sh1,420.
– Moving on to junior secondary school students, Knut recommends increasing their allowance from Sh15,544 to at least Sh22,000.
– In addition, for senior secondary school students, Knut strongly insists on increasing the current allocation from Sh19,628 to at least Sh35,000.
As well as funding concerns, Knut urged the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) to live up to its commitment to transition 46,000 teachers from practice to permanent and retired status. The union particularly highlighted the trainees’ commitment and called for priority consideration during the expected 2024 teacher recruitment drive.
In response to the TSC’s plan to extend trainee contracts until 2025, Knut vehemently defended primary directors against demotion. Oyuu argued that downgrading directors was impractical and called for a comprehensive review based on the provisions of the Labor Law.
In short, Knut’s advocacy revolves around the imperatives of increased funding for education, fair treatment of in-service teachers, and a different approach to the evolving educational environment. The union consistently emphasizes the essential role of financial support in ensuring the effective implementation of educational programs.
