KNUT Pushes Pay Rise For Teachers
KNUT Pushes Pay Rise For Teachers. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) requests a higher wage for primary school heads due to their greater responsibility. According to Collins Oyuu, the union secretary general, the decision to house junior secondary school students in primary schools would result in an increase in the workload for headteachers. Collins Oyuu told principals yesterday that better employment terms were needed.
There is a clause in the last CBA that remains unaddressed, and as a union, we will be asking a pay raise in line with terms and conditions of employment, according to Oyuu. Speaking at the Sheikh Zayed Children’s Welfare Care Hospital’s 18th Annual Conference of the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (Kepsha), Oyuu demanded that the headteacher wage revision go into force in January.
As the junior secondary school is now placed in elementary schools, we are interested in the situation for teachers in terms of their welfare as they assume these responsibilities. Oyuu believes that the terms need to be reviewed because head teachers would soon be overworked.
The union also demanded that the Teachers Service Commission advance both substitute teachers and teachers who have been inactive in one job category for a period. Due to the long-standing stasis in the growth of the tutors at that level, they urged the government to elevate headteachers in Grade 1.
