TSC Boss Nancy Macharia addresses the Education Committee on Recruitment Issues
TSC Boss Nancy Macharia addresses the Education Committee on Recruitment Issues. Recently, Dr. Nancy Macharia, the head of the Teacher Service Commission, spoke before the Education Committee about the problem of hiring teachers.
In order to address some of the concerns expressed by the committee’s members on the most recent mass hiring of teachers for junior secondary schools, Dr. Nancy Macharia was invited to the committee. In total, more than 30,000 teachers were hired, some on an internship basis and others on a permanent and pensionable basis.
The issue of effective hiring and training of teachers, as well as the need for improved pay for those currently working for TSC, were the key topics of discussion because there has been a need for worry.
When deploying teachers to junior secondary schools, the Education Committee noticed that many of them lacked the actual knowledge about Competency-Based Curriculum and what it entails. Hence retooling session for Grade Seven teachers in Junior Secondary is highly recommended and required.
From Nancy Macharia’s response she denoted that plans from training Grade seven teachers is underway and was planned to take place from January to April this year,2023.
The committee also talked about the importance of timely and accurate data collection, which would aid in the efficient management and use of TSC resources.
TSC resources to schools and Education Offices is necessary for smooth running of their services. But the moment therr is no closure inspection and provision of this resources , the education activities are likely to be retarded.
Data collection and evaluation should also be closely monitored, the data including Birth Certificates, UPI numbers used for registration of candidates. Like in the case where teachers and parents are colluding to illegally transfer Grade Seven students to Class Eight inorder to avoid CBC.
The committee was especially intrigued by the TSC’s developments in creating a system of teacher performance evaluation.
