Primary Teacher Training Areas 2023/2024. The areas will open in two phases, beginning in 2023 with 320 additional areas.
The number of openings in primary initial teacher education (ITE) programs will increase by 610.
The Department of Education announced that the extra spots will be made available in two stages: 320 in 2023, and the final 290 in 2024.
The new openings include 200 slots in Professional Master of Education (PME) programs, 30 more spots in B.Ed through Irish programs, and 90 more spots in B.Ed programs.
According to Minister of Education Norma Foley, “primary school teaching continues to be a very popular career option, both for children leaving school and for adults transitioning to teaching mid-career.”
She continued by saying that initiatives to lower student-teacher ratios as well as an increase in student enrollment have all contributed to a rise in demand for primary school instructors.
“I would want to express my appreciation for the higher education institutions’ dedication to the growing number of students enrolled in the Primary B.Ed., B.Oid., and Primary PME programs.
“Only with their cooperation is this big rise possible. The Minister said, “I would like to thank them for their ongoing cooperation and participation as well as for their open and constructive engagement with the department on this topic.
