Senator Okiya Orders TSC to Halt Teachers Sacco Remittance
Senator Okiya Orders TSC to Halt Teachers Sacco Remittance. The Senate Committee on Trade and Tourism has called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to stop sending funds to the Metropolitan Sacco from members who have opted out. The chairman of the committee, Okiya Omutatah, directed TSC director Nancy Machari to stop all deductions to the Metropolitan Sacco from teachers who formally informed her of their withdrawal.
Omutatah, who addressed the Bungoma teachers affected sacco and who also served as a Busia senator, questioned the rationale for continuing to transfer the teachers’ money to the savings sacco after they withdrew. He announced the committee’s intention to summon the cooperative secretary Simon Chelugui and the TSC boss next week to inquire about the disappearance of teachers’ funds at the Metropolitan Sacco.
Omutatah expressed concern for the affected teachers and stressed the commitment of the Senate to protect the assets of all Kenyans, including hard-earned savings. Along with Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli and Kiambu counterpart Paul Karunga, he lamented that Bungoma teachers who saved over Sh7 billion thanks to the sacco were facing problems in getting their funds.
Omutatah highlighted that the sacco allegedly refused to release the teachers’ money despite requests for withdrawal. KUPPET County Chairman David Barasa, representing the members, accused the TSC of working with the Metropolitan Sacco to hinder the teachers’ efforts, claiming that the TSC did not change their payment point from the sacco despite the withdrawal letters.
