Shock as TSC Interdicts 129 Non-local Teachers in North Eastern of Kenya. In a recent development, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has initiated a disciplinary panel for 129 non-local teachers who were prosecuted for desertion in North East Kenya. In particular, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has been silent on the matter.
Disciplinary hearings set to begin this week will require teachers to produce basic documents, including academic records, pay stubs, identification cards and teacher registration certificates. It is worth noting that their eventual reinstatement may be preceded by a warning letter, albeit without payment for the period of their absence.
The root cause of the ban is that teachers have not returned to work despite the TSC’s September directive. They sought transfers due to security concerns in northeastern Kenya.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia announced the start of the replacement process and deployed new teachers to Mandera, Wajir and Garissa districts. Macharia emphasized an open recruitment process, particularly addressing the shortage of physics and Islamic religious education teachers.
Although local teachers are given priority, Macharia strongly encourages qualified lecturers from other regions to apply. Investigations into teacher transfer requests will follow due process, with suspended educators remaining suspended during this period.
