Teachers will see more deductions on their payslips, Beginning July. Teachers, government workers, and other staff will have 1.5% of their gross income deducted starting on July 1st, 2023.
The original proposal from President William Ruto called for a mandatory 3 percent housing levy contribution, matched at the same rate by employers, with a combined contribution cap of Sh5,000.
However, under the new housing charge, employees will pay 1.5% of their gross monthly wage while employers make no contribution.
This means that teachers will donate 1.5% of their salaries, but the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) won’t pay anything.
Parliamentarians (MPs) opted to maintain the 1.5% housing levy on Wednesday.
There were 256 MPs present for the vote on Wednesday night.
The 1.5% for Housing Fund amendment received 184 of the 256 MPs’ votes, while 72 MPs abstained.

Prior to the vote, there was a heated debate over the planned housing charge. Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi argued that the public faced much more urgent problems than housing.
The majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah disputed his assertion, saying that the country should treat slum inhabitants similarly to how it treats hunger.
