The Kenya Teachers Training College will Require the Unification of all TTCs

The Kenya Teachers Training College will Require the Unification of all TTCs. Teacher training colleges will be merged into a single organization, following the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) model, if suggestions made by a taskforce on education reforms are accepted.

The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) proposal calls for the institutions to operate as a single college, similar to KMTC.

This suggests that Kenya Teacher Training College will open campuses at each of the 34 institutes of higher education for teachers.

The Basic Education Department of the Ministry of Education will also move its program for teacher preparation to the Higher Education Department.

One of the key changes that will be made to make training more accessible to more students is reworking the admission requirements now used for teacher training.

Enrollment at all TTCs is now below capacity because the government introduced amendments in 2021 requiring students to have a minimum mean grade of C (simple) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

The suggested changes will also get rid of the subject clustering used to choose candidates for the diploma in primary teacher education.

Currently, each cluster subject as well as English, Kiswahili, mathematics, a humanities course, and a science course must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

Candidates, though, have found it to be a challenging combination.

There are now 3,922 students registered in TTCs, which can hold 26,650 students.

The PWPER has also advocated using affirmative action to admit students from disadvantaged areas to TTCs.

Such kids will be admitted with lowered admission standards in an effort to boost the number of students in the regions.

The affected areas are understaffed and unattractive to many teachers due to security concerns.

For both the KMTC and teacher training, students will be placed through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service.
