TSC demotion of Headteachers
TSC demotion of Headteachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a new data collection exercise to determine the number of primary school teachers. They have prepared an Excel sheet for teachers to determine the highest level of education (P1, DEGREE, MASTER) and relevant information.
This move is in line with TSC’s efforts to implement the recommendations of the Education Commission, which proposed to consolidate and manage kindergartens, primary and secondary schools under the headmaster.
The so-called comprehensive schools are led by postgraduate students, assisted by vice principals, and must have a bachelor’s degree in education. Most elementary school teachers today are P1 teachers, even if they don’t have a diploma. Teachers and junior high school departments in their schools work as interim principals.
In the past, TSC did not consider the teacher’s career during the promotion period, focusing on the 7th grade life in the school. According to the current rules, teachers are expected to be able to run junior high schools until December 30, 2023. The TSC has a one-year deadline to implement the recommendations, which affect more than 23,000 public primary schools in Kenya. Guidelines for senior teachers led by principals will be developed by the TSC and the Ministry of Education.
Teachers who do not meet the new requirements will face layoffs, reduced responsibilities, and loss of control over school operations and resources at large. Some schools are having difficulty filling administrative positions. He will be responsible for all departments under the head of the comprehensive school and the composition of the School Management Board (BOM) is expected to change. In addition, in accordance with the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party for Education Reform (PWPER), the principals of middle and high schools will report to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
