TSC Newly Updated Requirements for One to Teach In Junior Secondary 2024. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is incharge of deployment of teachers to various schools in different levels from primary school, junior secondary and senior secondary.
Graduate teachers
Applicants for the graduate post must meet the following criteria:
1. A minimum average grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE.
2. C+ (plus) in each of the two subjects or two (2) principles and one (1) minor pass at ‘A’ level.
3. Eligible qualifications include:
– Bachelor’s degree with two (2) subjects.
– Bachelor’s degree in Science or Arts plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) with two subjects.
– Bachelor of Science with education/Bachelor of Arts with education with two subjects.
– Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education and Extension with two subjects.
Note: Applicants with the following qualifications are also eligible
– Diploma holders in Education with intermediate grades of C+ (Plus) and C+ (Plus) in two subjects at KCSE and a Bachelor’s degree.
– Those who have average grades of C (Plain) in KCSE and C (Plain) in A Level subjects of study and have obtained at least 1 Principle and 2 Branches for Sciences, 2 Principles and 1 Subsidiary for Arts before graduating with a Bachelor Degree.
Diploma teachers
Applicants for diploma teaching positions must meet the following criteria:
1. Minimum intermediate grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE or its equivalent with at least C+ (Plus) in two subjects.
2. Hearing and visually impaired teachers who have enrolled in training with an average grade of C (plain) and C (plain) in these two teaching subjects are eligible.
Teachers of technical subjects
Applicants for technical teacher positions must meet the following criteria:
1. A minimum grade average of C+ (Plus) at KCSE or its equivalent with at least C+ (Plus) in two subjects or one (1) Principle and two (2) Branches at “A” level.
2. Eligible qualifications include:
– Bachelor of Education Technology (BED TECH).
– Bachelor of Science (BSc) in any relevant technical subject(s)/course.
– Higher diploma in a technical course.
– Diploma in technical course.
Note: Applicants in category (ii) above MUST have a Diploma in Technical Teacher Training from the Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC).
A special note
Applicants whose training is in subjects not currently part of the secondary school curriculum, regardless of having completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and/or extension, are not eligible.
Special education
Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) and Braille are considered subjects in special education, eg Biology/KSL and Geography/Braille.
All applicants must study two subjects at KCSE, excluding Agriculture, Business Studies, Home Science and Computer Studies. For those who have not studied Business Studies and Computer Studies, a minimum of C+ (Plus) in Mathematics at KCSE is required. A minimum of C+ in Biology at KCSE is required for those who have not studied Agriculture and Home Science.
Graduate teachers should have completed a minimum of eight (8) courses in each subject, including Special Methods, and a minimum of three (3) months of teaching experience.
Certificates of Extension and Transcripts are valid if the applicant has not covered the minimum number of units during the degree/diploma program.
Applicants who have chosen to study a third subject must ensure that they have studied all units of the chosen subject over four years, including special methods and teaching practice.
Applicants who were previously employed under contract, with services terminated due to insufficient units, are eligible to apply if they have obtained extension certificates with adequate units.
