TSC Revised Duties and Responsibilities of School Principal and Deputy Principals. The School Principal and Deputy Principals are the administrators of schools in Kenya.
THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Is the school’s Accounting Officer.
b) Is to establish activity standards and goals for the school.
c) Manages the school’s finances.
d) Looks after the school’s infrastructure and facilities.
g) Plans, develops, and oversees the school’s curriculum and co-curricular activities.
f) Maintains school discipline among staff and pupils.
g) Oversees the school’s statutory records, rigorously adheres to the Ministry of Education’s approved admission and transfer list, and approves the issuing of testimonials and certificates.
h) Oversees the completion of the agreed external examination entry schedule.
i) Keeps a close eye on the performance of his Deputy Principal and Deputy-Principals.
j) Should be aware of government policies and regulations affecting the educational system.
j) Is to sign off on all incoming and departing correspondence.
l) Maintains a functional and friendly connection with the school community, the School Management Committee, the Old Students’ Association, and other key stakeholders.
m) Provide job descriptions for all supporting personnel.
n) Must teach at least six sessions per week.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (ADMINISTRATION) DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a) In the absence of the Principal, assumes command of the school.
b) As the school’s Accounting Officer, keeps the Admission Registers, issues Transfer Certificates, and testimonies under the tight supervision and control of the principal. If those two crucial documents are not properly handled and accounted for, the principal reserves the right to withdraw them from the possession of the Deputy Principal (Administration).
c) Maintains and monitors the employee attendance record and the employee mobility book.
d) Creates a weekly duty list for the staff and ensures that the duties are completed. Weekly reports on the duties performed during the week must be produced by the week’s coordinator and submitted to the Deputy Principal (Administration).
e) prepares statistical data and returns it to the proper quarters.
f) Presides over the Disciplinary Committee and guarantees that teachers and students maintain a high level of discipline.
g) Is in charge of the well-being of both teachers and students.
h) Ensures that Student Representative meetings are held on a regular basis and that resolutions adopted at the meetings are forwarded to the Principal.
i) Serves as the school’s second signatory on all financial transactions.
j) Appoints class instructors in consultation with the principal and oversees the appropriate maintenance of attendance registers.
j) Assists the Principal with general correspondence.
l) Oversees the performance of non-teaching staff.
m) Oversees non-academic co-curricular activities.
n) Undertakes any additional obligations given to him/her by the Principal.
o) Teach at least eight classes per week.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ACADEMIC DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
a) Assists the Principal with crucial day-to-day school operations in academic topics.
b) Ensures that current work schemes are provided in all topics.
c) Coordinates the assignment of subjects to all teachers with the Principal.
d) Creates the school schedule with the help of the schedule committee.
e) Marks the H.O.Ds’ lesson notes and ensures that the H.O.Ds’ lesson notes are marked by the teachers under them.
f) Regularly examines the lesson missed registers and monitors teachers’ performance in the classroom.
g) Ensures that the weekly work record is recorded in the diary and reviewed at the conclusion of the week.
h) Chairs the Examination Committee and ensures that periodic tests are administered, graded, documented, and kept.
i) Keeps accurate statistics records on academic subjects.
j) Oversees subject-related co-curricular activities, such as (subject associations).
j) With the Principal’s consent, holds frequent meetings with Year Tutors and H.O.Ds to discuss academic concerns, the minutes of which must be submitted to the Principal within three days.
l) Assists with general staff and student discipline.
m) Serves as one of the school’s three signatories.
n) Serves as Chairman of the speech and award-giving day committees.
o) Performs additional duties as directed by the Principal.
p) Teach at least eight classes every week.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (SPECIAL DUTIES)
a) Maintains complete control of the school tone and promotes a favourable learning and teaching environment at all times.
b) Ensures that the school’s physical infrastructure is continually checked and maintained.
c) Consistently guarantees that the school’s garbage is properly managed and disposed of on a regular basis. The Vice-Principal (Special Duties) is in charge of the school’s general cleanliness and water supply, with the cooperation of the school principal.
d) All repairs required within the school should be brought to the attention of the vice principal (special tasks), who will notify the school principal.
g) He shall supervise and monitor any external invitational actions.
b) Ensures that the school’s social events and activities are strengthened and reinforced.
g) As ordered by the school principal, assists the other two vice-principals on occasion.
h) Although the principal is the school’s chief security officer, he does so with the constant assistance of the Deputy-Principal (Special Duties).
i) He serves as a liaison officer for requests between the school and the Sub-County.
j) Assists the other two vice-principals with academic and co-curricular difficulties.
k) He undertakes any additional obligations delegated by the principal.
l) Teach at least eight classes every week.
