RE: EXTENSION OF SERVICE AFTER THE MANDATORY RETIREMENT AGE IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE
TSC Teachers Retirement Age Extension clarification
TSC Teachers Retirement Age Extension clarification. Please refer to Circular Ref. No. OP.CAB 2/7A, dated March 20, 2009, which reviewed the mandatory retirement age increase from 55 to 60 years old effective April 1, 2009.
This was further examined by the Public Service Commission’s circular, ref. no. PSC/ADM/13(7), dated November 19, 2020.
The Ministry in charge of Public Service has learned that Public Officers who have reached the requisite age as specified by the Public Service Commission Act are frequently requesting unjustifiable extensions from the Commission.
According to the Public Service Commission Act 2017’s Section 80(1)(a) and (b), a public officer must retire from their position as of the day they reach the obligatory retirement age.
TSC Teachers Retirement Age Extension Clarification
The statutory retirement age of 60 years, or sixty-five (65) years for those with disabilities, cannot be exceeded by the Commission or any other appointing body.
In order to allow for the right legislation and succession management policies to be implemented throughout the Public Service, it is requested in this letter that all extension review cases be put on hold and any current easements be withdrawn.
Yours Sincerely.
Hon. Aisha Jumwa Katana.
