TSC to Punish Teachers Without Professional Certificates
TSC to Punish Teachers Without Professional Certificates. Teachers at both primary and secondary levels are to undergo mandatory professional development programs as set out in the forthcoming Teachers Service Commission (TSC) regulations. The TSC (Amendment) Bill 2024, which aims to revise the Teaching Service Commission Act 2012, introduces a requirement for all certified teachers registered under the TSC to obtain a certificate of practice.
This directive underscores the commission’s commitment to promoting teaching standards within the profession. Failure to participate in the prescribed continuous professional development or to obtain a certificate of practice will, according to the proposed legislation, result in teachers being banned from teaching.
The Commission stands ready to work with various stakeholders to facilitate the issuance of these certifications and potentially partner with academic institutions, organizations or government agencies to administer them.
The Bill gives the TSC the power to appoint representatives or to appoint committee members or staff to conduct investigations in educational institutions to ensure compliance with these new requirements.
Once enacted, TSC will develop regulations to effectively implement these additional academic prerequisites. In order to maintain teaching standards, teachers will be assessed and graded based on an agreed grading system.
In addition, TSC will implement capacity building initiatives for all registered teachers to enhance their performance, productivity and professional development. This comprehensive approach reflects a commitment to continuous improvement within the teaching profession.
