Transition of basic salary of chief principals

Let’s take a closer look at the transformation of the base pay of chief executives that will bridge the gap between the pre-July 2023 structure and the updated system:

    Main Highlights

The new basic salary structure for Senior Principals in Grade D5 starts at 131,380 Kenyan Shillings.

As teachers advance in their roles, their salaries gradually increase, reflecting increased responsibility and experience.

    Hardship Allowance

Hardship Allowance is of great importance in teacher compensation, particularly for those working in areas marked by adverse conditions such as extreme weather, limited access to equipment or safety concerns.

D5 teachers, who often carry substantial responsibilities, receive a hardship allowance of KES 38,100, recognizing the additional challenges of their roles.

    Commuting allowance

The commuting allowance is intended to ease the financial burden of daily commuting on teachers.

It recognizes the costs associated with commuting, including fuel costs, public transport charges and wear and tear on personal vehicles.

Grade D5 teachers receive a commuting allowance of 16,000 Kenyan Shillings.

This contribution recognizes the dedication of teachers who may need to travel considerable distances to reach their educational institutions.

    Annual leave allowance

Teachers work tirelessly throughout the academic year and the annual holiday allowance ensures that they are duly rewarded for their commitment. This post highlights the importance of rest and rejuvenation for educators.

D5 teachers receive an annual holiday allowance of 10,000 Kenyan Shillings, which encourages them to take well-deserved breaks to recharge and return to their students with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

Contribution to the guide for persons with disabilities

Special education teachers (SNEs) play a critical role in meeting the diverse needs of students with disabilities. Contribution to the guide of the disabled emphasizes the importance of their work.

Grade D5 teachers involved in SNE receive a monthly allowance of 20,000 Kenyan Shillings. This contribution is critical to attracting and retaining educators with the expertise and compassion necessary to provide inclusive education for all students.”
