Salaries for Intern Teachers Suffers a Setback in July
Salaries for Intern Teachers Suffers a Setback in July. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a pay rise, but the recently hired intern teachers will not be entitled to it.
TSC interns are not currently eligible for a pay raise because their employment is governed by a contract.
According to the commission, intern teachers in primary schools are paid a stipend of Sh15,000 per month and intern teachers at secondary schools (including junior secondary schools) are paid a salary of Sh20,000 per month.
Teachers and secretaries from the Commission are only now receiving their July paychecks. The paychecks that are expected to be distributed by this Saturday also include third-party deductions such as loans, union dues, and insurance payments.

Primary school teachers who had recently been employed and placed on the job had already received their pay in May. Some teachers’ allowances have changed, while others have witnessed a delay in their payouts.
Teachers will have a 7% basic pay rise starting with the July payment period.
More than 350,000 teachers and secretariat staff members will benefit from the increase, which was made possible by the National Treasury’s allocation of a total of sh 9.1 billion to TSC for the same purpose.
President William Ruto offered a 7%–10% pay increase for teachers and government workers, saying it was designed to help people cope with the present economic situation.
However, due to the court’s involvement, the plan to take 1.5% of the total income for the housing fund was dropped. After hearing from Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and other petitioners, Judge Mugure Thande of the High Court rejected the petitioners’ allegations and upheld the orders suspending the Finance Act 2023.
A three-judge court made up of High Court Judges David Majanja, Christine Meoli, and Lawrence Mugambi will now consider twelve complaints against the Finance Act 2023 that were filed in opposition to the tax bill.
