TSC CEO Nancy Macharia Set to Retire On this Date Next Year. With the impending departure of the Secretary and Executive Director of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Dr. The prospect of succeeding Nancy Njeri Machari has attracted considerable interest as she retires. Dr. Macharia is due to go on permanent leave in March next year, with her official retirement set for June 2025, opening the succession contest.
To dispel previous confusion about the timing of the departure of Dr. Macharia, the TSC clarified last year that as a civil servant as defined by law, she is not subject to the mandatory retirement rule. Despite reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60 under the public commission laws, TSC’s Director of Legal, Labor and Industrial Relations, Mr. Cavin Anyuor, stressed that Dr. Nancy Macharia will serve her full 10-year term ending in 2025 in accordance with the TSC Act and the Constitution.
Anyuor referred to Section 16(3) of the TSC Act 2012, which categorizes the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission as a civil servant, and cited Article 260 of the Constitution for the precise definition of civil servants. Dr. Born in 1963, Macharia has spent more than 28 years in Kenya’s education sector, assuming her current role in May 2015 following a competitive process.
Despite opposition from stakeholders and educators, Dr. Macharia renewed her tenure for another 5 years until 2025 in June 2020. Throughout her tenure, she has been instrumental in formulating robust policies to streamline the teaching profession and improve service delivery to Kenyan children.
Especially Dr. Nancy Macharia advocated for teacher growth and consistently urged the government to allocate funds for increased teacher recruitment and promotion to higher job groups.
