The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled its five-year recruitment plan, which aims to hire an additional 111,870 teachers by 2027 to tackle the public school teacher shortage. This initiative, outlined in the Strategic Plan 2023-2027, builds on previous efforts launched during the administration of President William Ruto in the 2022/23 financial year. Dr. Nancy Macharia, head of the TSC, highlighted the support she received from Kenya’s Kwanza administration in the last financial year (2022/23), which enabled the recruitment of 30,000 new teachers to close existing gaps in schools. In addition, the commission has recruited an additional 20,000 in-service teachers in the 2023/24 financial year, supported by an allocation of Sh4.7 billion.
The forthcoming budget allocation for 2024/2025, which is awaiting parliamentary approval, includes provisions for the confirmation of senior trainees and the potential recruitment of an additional 20,000 trainees from August 2024.
Despite the accepted teacher-student ratio of 1:40, which is prevalent in urban areas and informal settlements, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommends a 25 student-to-teacher ratio for primary schools nationwide.
TSC has committed to meeting its recruitment targets by the end of 2027 to tackle teacher shortages and improve ratio problems in schools and ensure students receive the quality education crucial to shaping the country’s future. TSC PNP Teacher Recruitment.
