TSC Declares Target To Hire 35,000 New Teachers
TSC Declares Target To Hire 35,000 New Teachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will have hired 35,000 additional teachers by December 2024.
The Commission will hire teachers for elementary, junior high, and secondary schools on both a permanent basis and for internships. Nonetheless, the junior secondary level will be overseen by a sizable fraction of the teachers.
To support junior secondary schools, which were launched in January, TSC was given a budget of Sh322 billion, of which Sh3.8 billion was designated for the hire of 20,000 new teachers this year.
The salaries of the 10,000 teachers and 20,000 interns appointed in February on full-time, pensionable contracts would total Sh11.1 billion.
Several junior high school teachers have already gotten their compensation this month. Yet, some have not yet received payment.
TSC Chief Nancy Macharia said in a statement to Parliament that the intern teachers would be added to regular and pensionable terms of service after a year.
If we allow ourselves to have more interns, they will eventually be converted to P and P, which will help us recruit more teachers, according to Macharia.
If they are to directly hire them on permanent and pensionable terms, the CEO stated that the commission can only accept in about 8,000 teachers.
They will be P and P in 2025, she said, and after a year as interns, they will advance to being absorbed.

Rebecca Tonkei, a Narok County Woman MP, had asked how long it takes to integrate an intern.
“If you hired 20,000 people this year, how do you intend to keep them on P&P, and how long will they be interns?” said Tonkei.
Running the sector on interns is not sustainable, according to Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera.
He questioned why TSC didn’t want to hire any teachers with pensions this year.
He asked, “What is the justification for wanting to recruit them in 2024 but not this year?”
All interns who were working in 2022 were converted into permanent teachers who were also eligible for retirement.
This is in accordance with a memo dated January 11 and signed by Joseph Mugele, director of staffing at TSC.
The memo from back then stated, “The exercise interviews start on January 13 and recruitment documents are set for February 6.”
The interns were to remain on the payroll, at the director’s request.

This would aid in the wait for their staff under the new circumstances, he claimed.
According to a statement from the commission dated December, 10,000 of the teachers will have full-time, pensionable jobs, while 25,550 will be interns.
The report states that each of the open posts will be filled by 1,000 permanent primary school teachers, 9,000 permanent secondary school teachers, and 21,550 intern instructors for the Junior Secondary School.
According to the commission, 4000 more intern instructors would be hired for primary schools.
